Double your job opportunities

If you’re considering courses to maximise your employability, you might try looking at studying a double degree.

Studying a double degree means you study two degrees simultaneously. Many institutions can provide you with this opportunity and can offer combinations ranging from a Bachelor of Business/ Bachelor of Arts to a Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Law.

Double degrees are designed to allow you breadth of study and increased employment opportunities within the fields of your chosen disciplines.

Although the double degree may increase your job opportunities, it doesn’t take double the time to complete. Depending on your institution, you can gain two qualifications in the same amount of time it would take you to complete a single degree.

Many bachelor degrees will allow you to study a double major. For example, if you chose to study a Bachelor of Arts you could have majors as diverse as Zoology and Japanese. Double majors differ from double degrees in that they only provide you with one qualification upon completion.

Meet Yoori, Jana and Melissa, Assistant International Student Counsellors at StudyLink Sydney

Yoori, Jana and Melissa are current international students studying in Sydney.

Yoori Kim is doing a Masters in TESOL. Yoori is Korean and was born and raised in Japan. She speaks Japanese and Korean. Yoori has work experience as a Residential Assistant and International Officer while studying at a regional Australian university for her bachelor degree.

Jana is originally from the Czech Republic and is studying a Masters of Applied Linguistics at the University of Sydney. She speaks English, Czech, Spanish, and basic Japanese. She has studied in Spain and England and has experience as a language teacher and tour guide.

Melissa Descombes speaks French and has recently arrived from Mauritius. She is doing a Bachelor of Arts and worked briefly for the Australian High Commission in Mauritius before coming to Sydney.

Important deadlines for your application

Australia – Apply now to start in February/March 2007. You should submit your application and supporting documents by October 31. This allows time for the institution to process your application and hopefully time for you to apply for a student visa. Keep in mind that you do not need to scan and attach your documents, a counsellor can do this for you. Contact a counsellor for assistance with selecting a course or completing your applications.

US – The next term you can apply for starts in January/February of 2007 and the main term starts in September for most institutions. English language schools and some other institutions allow students to start throughout the year. Application deadlines vary and we encourage you to apply well in advance for best consideration and to allow time to apply for a visa. UK – Applications are now open for September 2007 and some courses are available for students interested in a January 2007 start. For best consideration for September 2007, applications should be submitted by early January 2007. Swansea’s research-led growth to create 500 new jobs

Five hundred new jobs are expected to be created at Swansea University over three years due to its receipt of more than _30 million in new research funding.

This growth is planned in the face of fierce national and international competition for research funding.
Swansea University pro vice-chancellor (research) Professor Nigel Weatherill said: “This is a reflection of the quality of staff at Swansea. They have extensive knowledge of their fields of interest and are able to put forward proposals for research projects that meet the requirements of funding agencies, such as the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).”

Research funding has been obtained from the UK Research Councils, Government departments, the Welsh Assembly Government, the European Union, and the numerous commercial and industrial partners whose collaborative work with the university leads to innovative solutions and new products.

Swansea University vice-chancellor Professor Richard B Davies said the university had ambitious plans to help transform Swansea into a modern science city. “These 500 new jobs are an impressive start but we will not be resting on our laurels.”

The university’s planned growth follows hot on the heels of its success winning the Best Student Experience award in 2005.
