Australia: CDU taps into local indigenous knowledge
Charles Darwin University, Australia will open a new Centre of Traditional Knowledge in conjunction with the United Nations University (UNU). The announcement was made on the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People, August 9th.
The Centre will be an internationally focused research and training facility, drawing on the traditional knowledge of indigenous communities from a global perspective. It plans to promote the use of traditional knowledge in education systems, science and technology and also provide greater self-reliance for indigenous people.
"The Northern Territory's knowledge-based industries are continuing to grow, from Desert Knowledge in the Centre to Tropical Knowledge in the Top End,” said NT Minister for Employment, Education and Training, Paul Henderson. "By harnessing the unique knowledge of Indigenous people for practical applications in areas such as science and environmental management, the Centre for Traditional Knowledge will help develop new economic opportunities, particularly in our remote and regional areas,"
Charles Darwin University offers international students a very different perspective of Australia. It is located in a region spanning wet tropics in the north to arid desert in the south; an area steeped in Aboriginal tradition and culture yet close to Southeast Asia. It offers English language classes, vocational and technical education certificates and diplomas, higher education degrees and advanced research doctorates.
International students from over 50 countries study at campuses in Darwin, Palmerston, Alice Springs and Katherine. The largest campus is in Darwin: a youthful, multicultural, cosmopolitan, tropical state capital city. After graduating, international students also have the opportunity to be sponsored by the NT government for a Skilled Independent Regional (SIR) visa.
