Australia: Murdoch fast-tracks engineering degrees to meet booming demand
For the first time in Australia, engineering students will have the option of finishing their studies in three years instead of four at Murdoch University in Perth, Western Australia.
Science and Engineering Executive Dean Professor Yianni Attikiouzel said the accelerated Bachelor of Engineering degree was largely in response to the shortage of engineers around the world.
“Australia is currently experiencing a major skills shortage in all engineering disciplines…this is especially acute in Western Australia, where there is a mining and minerals boom,” said Professor Attikiouzel..
The accelerated degree works to a more flexible timetable. Summer and Winter terms will be added to the standard two teaching semesters, so students spend 39 weeks in class instead of 26.
Students will continue to undertake highly valuable workplace experience during the course, which is mandatory for both the standard and accelerated program.
WA’s resource boom has placed an enormous demand on engineering skills.
Angelo D’Agostino, an engineer with Worsley Alumina, believes that more students will be encouraged to study engineering with the new fast-track degree, as they can reach their career goals sooner. This is especially important to students who have moved away from home to study, as it also reduces their study costs.
Murdoch University offers a variety of engineering specialisations. The main university campus, South Street, is just 15 minutes from the dynamic city of Perth and is the largest university campus in Australia. It even includes a scaled engineering plant for students to gain real-world experience – one of the only plants of its kind in the world.
