Australia: New hospitality degree at NMIT
Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT) are introducing a new three-year bachelor degree in Hospitality Management next year.
Filling a need for graduates with practical experience and professional qualifications, the new degree will give students the skills they need to manage hotels, motels, restaurants, convention facilities and events.
NMIT is a large multi-campus, government funded college. It offers a wide range of accredited vocational training, including English language courses. Hospitality students are based in the world-class tourism and hospitality training centre on the Preston campus of NMIT, just nine km north of Melbourne.
As well as the latest technology and industry standard equipment, the campus also uses the popular on-campus St Georges restaurant as its main training facility. The restaurant is hosting its annual food and wine expo this month.
Although it is an academic program there is a strong practical component so graduates are immediately employable in the industry. Greg Purton, NMIT Associate Director of the faculty, says “NMIT graduates have a combination of academic knowledge learned and applied in commercial scale enterprises, and developed through industry placement.”
Masakazu Tachikawa, from Japan, has recently completed her Advanced Diploma of Hospitality at NMIT. She says, “The most valuable thing I learned… not only from textbooks and lectures, but also from the learning process … was how to work as a team, and how to encourage others. If you like working with people, then hospitality is your course.”
