UK: Heriot-Watt nominated for top international student support

Heriot-Watt University has been shortlisted for two Times Higher Education Supplement Awards, including Outstanding Support to International Students. This award is based on independent student survey results. The second award nomination is for Business Initiative of the Year, for its spinout company Nandi Proteins.

The winners of all the THES awards will be announced in London on November 29th.

With three campuses in Scotland, plus a new campus in Dubai, Heriot-Watt is one of the UK’s oldest higher education institutions. It is often referred to as Scotland’s international university, with a third of its on campus students coming from outside the UK, and over 90 countries represented there.

The main campus is located about 40 minutes from the cosmopolitan city of Edinburgh, and has recently supported the first International Scottish Students Festival at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange. Liam Burns, Heriot-Watt University Students Association President, says; “we have concentrated on improving international student involvement (in social activities) for two years now and we are clearly seeing the fruits of our work.”

Heriot-Watt University is also known for its ground-breaking and practical research. Specialist research areas include science, engineering, business management, language, and textile design. The nomination for Business Initiative of the Year shows its ability to turn research work into a commercial enterprise.

Nandi Proteins Limited was created from university research in 2001, and is now at the forefront of making fat replacement products by improving the functional properties of common proteins. The development of the technology is still mainly made through a team of post-doctorate researchers based at the university.
