UK: Oxford Brookes overtakes traditional universities

Oxford Brookes University is consistently recognised as Britain’s best modern university. The Times Good University 2008 Guide now places it at 49th out of 113 UK universities, and 26th for graduate employment (ahead of Manchester, Nottingham and Edinburgh Universities).

It also has strong student satisfaction ratings – better than 13 ‘older’ universities. Nine out of ten Brookes students say they would recommend the University to prospective students, according to the Student Satisfaction Survey in 2005.

“Oxford Brookes enjoys the atmosphere of one the world’s true student cities,” according to the Virgin 2007 Alternative Guide to British Universities. Over 4000 students come from overseas, studying a wide range of courses from English language to undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.

Oxford itself is of course home to one of the most well-known universities in the world, and has a large international student population. Large enough to offer a lively mix of shops, restaurants and activities, but small enough to get around easily, it is only an hour by train or bus from London.

Oxford Brookes University has developed a flexible study program over the past 26 years. Courses are modular and can be taken part-time. Individual modules can be taken without registering for the whole degree, allowing students to update their knowledge in areas of interest. A January start is also available – useful when you need extra time to meet language requirements or make travel arrangements.

“I knew which course I wanted to do and Oxford Brookes consistently ranked highly in university ratings. I also like the idea of living in Oxford,” says Poulomee Basu from India, who also received a Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) scholarship for her MSc in Spatial Planning at Oxford Brookes.
